Men’s swimming defeats Vassar

This weekend, the Brandeis swimming and diving team hosted Vassar College, splitting the meet with the Brewers by winning 16 of the 32 events. The men won 11 of 16 races, defeating Vassar 141-131, but the women were not able to get past the Brewers and lost 155-115, winning five out of 16 races.

For the men’s team, it was Tamir Zitelny ’20 and Daniel Wohl ’21 who led the men to victory over the Brewers, each winning four events. Zitelny had two individual wins and also swam in two winning relay teams. Meanwhile, Wohl led the team with three personal wins and one relay win. In individual events, Wohl won the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.71 seconds, beating his own teammate Marcelo Ohno-Machado ’21 by just .07 seconds. Wohl went on to win the 100 and 200 freestyle as well, with respective times of 49.31 seconds and 1:48.18. In the relay, Wohl and Ohno-Machado teamed up alongside Zitenly and Tom Alger ’20 to win the 400 relay with a time of 3:20.45.

Zitelny also had a successful meet for the Judges. In his individual events, he won the 100-yard backstroke, finishing three seconds before Joe Beletti-Naccarato ’21, with a time of 54.34. He also won the 100-yard butterfly, beating classmate Matthew Arcemont ’20 with a time of 52.21 seconds, 2.7 seconds ahead of Arcemont. Zitelny was also the anchor in the winning 400 freestyle relay, and he was the lead swimmer in the winning 400 medley relay.

Brandon Lu ’22 also brought home wins for the Judges winning both the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke with respective times of 1:02.80 and 2:17.31. James Barno ’23 picked up his first win of his collegiate career in the 200 back, and Arcemont picked up another win in the 200 Individual Medley. 

For the women’s team the Judges had four individual wins, and one relay victory. Two of the four individual wins were picked up by Bailey Gold ’23. She secured the victory in the 200 butterfly finishing at 2:12.84. She also had an impressive 500 freestyle race, finishing with a time of 5:30.13. This time was not only 13 seconds ahead of second place, but also was the fifth best time in Brandeis history in this event. 

The Judges picked up two more individual wins in the 100 breaststroke and the 50 freestyle. Emily McGovern ’21 finished first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:12.69, and Ema Rennie ’23 finished with a time of 25.35 in the 50 free. 

McGovern was also a part of the Judges winning 200 medley relay team, where she was joined by Audrey Kim ’21, Christina McPhillips ’23 and Uajda Musaku ’21. They beat the Vassar team by just one-tenth of a second. 

The Brandeis swim and dive team will move on to Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) this weekend where they will face Babson, Smith and Simmons.
