Men’s soccer drop back in UAA rankings after three in-conference losses

Since our last publication, the men’s soccer team has played two games on the road and one home game. The Judges traveled to Atlanta, Georgia to face the Emory University Eagles on Friday, Oct. 20, then to Rochester, New York to face the University of Rochester Yellowjackets on Sunday, Oct. 22.. Their final game covered in this recap was played at Gordon Field on Saturday, Oct. 28. against the Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) Spartans. The game against CWRU was also the Judges’ senior day to celebrate their three graduating seniors; Nick Dunstan-Maiese ’24, Sancho Maroto Tobias ’24 and Roee Maor ’24.

In their first game of these three University Athletic Association (UAA) conference games for the Judges, they faced the #7-ranked Emory University Eagles. This game was back-and-forth, though the Eagles came away with a 4-2 win over the Judges. Though this was a tough loss for the Judges, they were still able to come away having been only the second team this year to score more than one goal against the Eagles. The Eagles came out as any #7-ranked team should, and scored only two minutes into the game. The Judges fought back to tie the game up in the 18th minute from a goal by Roee Maor ’24. Despite this goal, the Eagles concluded the half with a 3-1 lead over the Judges. The Eagles’ final goal of the contest was scored in the 63rd minute. Aiming to equalize the game once more, the Judges scored their second and final goal of the game in the 70th minute. This Brandeis goal was shot by Maddox Yu ’27 from an assist from fellow rookie Juan Vera ’27. The game concluded with the Eagles out-shooting the Judges 19-10.

After traveling to the University of Rochester, the Judges faced the Yellowjackets in another close match. Similar to the women’s soccer team, the men’s team lost this game through a late goal scored against them in the second half. There were several promising shots made by the Judges, with attempts from Maor, Yu, Maroto Tobias and Henning Dierks ’25, though none were successful. The Yellowjackets’ goal came in the 58th minute off of a deflected cross from the Judges. Though the Judges fought hard during this game, it was only their second shutout of the season against the team.

To conclude this recap, the Judges hosted the CWRU Spartans in a home game. Though the Judges lost 2-1 to the Spartans, they were still able to score a goal and avoid getting shut out. The first half of the game was evenly matched with neither team successfully capitalizing on any goal-scoring opportunities. The Spartans’ first goal came in the 51st minute and their second was scored during the 73rd minute of play. After a hard-fought effort, Roee Maor ’24 put the Judges on the board in the 75th minute of play. This was an exciting moment for this senior Judge in his final game on Gordon Field.

Looking ahead, the Judges travel to New York City to face the New York University Violets on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 1:30 p.m. This is their final game of the 2023 season. The livestream link for this game is posted on the Judges’ Athletics Website.
