Since the last publication of The Hoot, the Judges men’s tennis team has played and lost against Skidmore, while the women’s team played against Wesleyan, Springfield and Trinity, losing at Wesleyan and winning 9-0 against the other two.
On March 23, the men’s team played against Skidmore in Saratoga Springs, NY. Doubles started out well as Dylan Walters ’24 and Pierce Garbett ’24 won 8-5, but the second match was a 8-7 (8-6) decision in favor of Skidmore while the third match was forfeited. The Judges easily picked up two points during singles, as Walters played 7-5, 6-3, and Garbett played 6-1, 6-2. However, Skidmore still retained a two-point lead. Everything came down to two three-set matches. Aaron Basye ’24 had a promising start but fell 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 0-6. Harrison Huai ’27 also lost, but only after a third-set super tiebreaker 6-1, 2-6, 9-11.
On March 21, the women’s team travelled to Middlebury, CT, to play against Wesleyan. Bhakti Parwani ’25 and Rebecca Suarez ’26 scored an 8-5 win, but the Judges lost the other two doubles matches. More losses were yet to come, however, as the Wesleyan Cardinals won all of the singles matches. Lika Bolkvadze ’27 had the strongest showing, losing only narrowly by 7-5 and 6-4. Ultimately the match was an 8-1 loss for the Judges.
On March 28, the women’s team returned to Waltham to play against Springfield. The Judges swept the doubles matches as Mandy Reyes ’27 and Nancy Zhang ’26 won 8-2, Suarez and Parwani won 8-0 and Cecillia Denis ’25 and Sabrina Loui ’25 also won 8-2. The Judges kept the momentum going with a clean sweep in singles. Boldkvadze won 6-2, 6-2, Anastasia Sia ’25 won 6-1, 6-1, Parwani won 6-2, 6-2, and Sanjana Kumar ’27 won 6-0, 6-0. The day finished as Ella Subramanian ’24 won 6-1, 6-4 and Jiayi Zhang ’24 took a 7-5, 6-2, decision. The final score was 9-0 in favor of Brandeis.
Next, on March 29, the women’s team remained in Waltham to play against Trinity. The Judges quickly won two doubles matches as Reyes and Zhang won 8-0 and Chahana Budhbatti ’27 and Denis won 8-1. In the third match, Suarez and Parwani had a tougher time, but ultimately triumphed 8-6. The singles were yet another clean sweep. Budhbatti won 6-2, 6-1, Parwani 6-2, 6-2, Suarez 6-2, 6-3, Zhang 6-2 6-1 and Boldkvadze 6-2, 6-2. Sia had the longest match of the day, but took home a 6-1, 7-5 win in the end. This was the Judge’s second 9-0 win in a row, a truly impressive performance.
The men’s team will next play at MIT on April 4, although the Hoot will not be able to get results at press time, before playing NYU on the 6th and Coast Guard on the 10, Mary Washington on the 12 and Babson on the 13. The women’s team will also play NYU on the 6th before playing Wellsley on the 7, Skidmore on the 13 and Babson on the 14.
