A new bike share program is coming to Brandeis

DeisBikes is a club that has been attempting to gain the attention of the student body. From posts on Fizz to roaming the Club Involvement Fair with flyers, DeisBikes has made it clear that they want Brandeis students to pay attention. So, what is DeisBikes?

Speaking to Allan Feldman ’26, one of the founding members of the club, some of the details surrounding their mission became clearer. DeisBikes is working on getting a free bikeshare program up and running across the campus. DeisBikes is funded by the Campus Sustainability Fund. In the pilot program, set to start this spring, they are slated to have 12 bikes available in Massel Quad. When asked about why the pilot program was starting in Massel, Feldman stated, “We chose Massel as the starting location because there is already an existing bike shelter there and we are focusing on making this program work for the pilot program and launch year.” The pilot program will consist of an open focus group. The group will download an app which will allow them access to the bikes in Massel. This phase of the program will be focused on collecting data, calibrating the process and ironing out possible problems.

When asked about the future of the program, Feldman said DeisBikes plan to expand the program to 20 bikes for the next official launch next fall. The club hopes to continue expanding into “a robust program with a large team that helps sustain the bikeshare program for years to come.” The club predicts having at least 200 individual users over the course of the pilot program with more students using the service as it expands. This program will be a substantial addition to the transportation options on campus; especially for times when the Brandeis shuttle is not available.
