More than a library
Everybody knows that the library has way more than archival books. It’s a great study spot. It has great coffee. It’s got okay printers. But there is so much more than just the tables in Farber. Even more than just hosting the Writing Center and IT desk. In my search for the online IT form, I discovered numerous events and resources that I would never have assumed to find in a library. I can’t go through and list every single thing that is offered by our very own Goldfarb and Farber, but I’ll compromise and share some of the highlights of what I found.
- Notary Service: Our library offers notary services. You might think that is completely useless, but I’m not even kidding, I had two friends in the same week that needed a notary. And lucky for them we have one in our own backyard. If you ever do need a notary, just know you can book an appointment here rather than searching for somewhere off campus.
- Sewing: The library has many workshops that are worth a search, but “Intro to Sewing” definitely stands out. Don’t let your lack of sewing machine stop you from learning to sew when you can just go to the library. If you’re not so interested in sewing, maybe some of their other workshops like “Intro to Soldering” are more interesting.
- Recording Studio: On the third floor of Goldfarb there is a full professional recording studio for student use. I actually have used the studio, and it is very cool and fun to use if you are into music. You need to go to one of the SIMS training workshops, which can be found on the library website, but the training is super quick and easy. Definitely worth the access to professional grade recording equipment.
- Guitars: If you have no interest in recording music, but love to play music there is still something for you. There are lots of guitars (and amps and keyboards) available to rent out in Farber 3. I believe that most instruments can be taken out of the library for up to three days. You don’t have to take out an instrument if you don’t want to, but it’s there for those who do.
- Makerlab: Lastly, for anybody who did not already know there is a MakerLab in the Farber Mezzanine. I am not an engineer, but from what I can tell online the lab seems to offer a lot. There is soldering, 3D printing, CAD training, laser cutting, drones, 3D imaging, etc. All of the tools to help you make new things. Including consultation to think of where to start.
Obviously there are a lot more than the five resources I mentioned. I thought these serve a wider audience, but the website has a lot of cool things if you dig around. I would definitely recommend that you don’t just take my word for what’s interesting but also look for what else our library may have for you.
