The on-campus community has reached over 90 percent vaccinated and the university has updated its campus COVID-19 protocol for community members including increasing capacities for gathering sizes, according to emails sent by Dan Kim, Senior Vice President, Communications, Marketing and External Relations; Carol A. Fierke, Provost and Executive Vice President for Academics; Stew Uretsky, Executive Vice President for Finance and Administration and Raymond Lu-Ming Ou, Vice President of Student Affairs. At the time of publication the on-campus community was over 90 percent vaccinated.
The university has begun to lift COVID-19 restrictions on-campus due to the decreasing rate of COVID-19 infection in Massachusetts as well as the high vaccination rate of community members, according to an email sent by Kim to the community on June 4. The university’s on-campus community is now over 90 percent vaccinated, according to an email sent by Fierke, Uretsky and Ou.
Fully vaccinated community members no longer have to wear masks outdoors, but must continue to practice social distancing, wrote Kim. Starting July 5, the social distancing guidelines changed from six feet of social distancing to three feet for both indoor and outdoor gatherings, according to the updated policies on the Summer 2021 page of the COVID-19 Response website. Masks must still be worn at all indoor university events, regardless of an individual’s vaccination status, according to the page.
Visitors will be allowed on campus without providing a negative COVID-19 test result, though they may not stay overnight, according to the same email. Permission to come to campus is no longer required, according to the Summer 2021 page of the COVID-19 Response website.
Domestic travel no longer requires special approval from the university for vaccinated individuals, according to the Summer 2021 page of the COVID-19 Response website. For international travel, vaccinated students must receive prior written permission from their dean. Unvaccinated individuals must get approval from their dean for both domestic and international travel, according to the page.
Fully-vaccinated members of the community will no longer have to submit a test every 84 hours (twice a week). Community members who have uploaded their completed vaccination card to the Campus Passport Portal will be asked to complete a test every other week, every 336 hours, according to the email. Individuals who are not vaccinated or have not uploaded their vaccination card, will be asked to test twice per week, every 96 hours, wrote Kim. These updated community standards apply for faculty, staff and students.
In a June 11 email sent to the community, the university will approve vaccination cards for community members who have received WHO-authorized or approved vaccines, including Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson and Johnson.
Students who were unable to receive the vaccine will be able to make a vaccination appointment before they come to campus in August, according to the email. While the student waits to be fully vaccinated with both doses of the vaccine they will have to follow the guidelines of the unvaccinated community.
Students applying for medical or religious exemption from receiving the vaccine must upload a request to the Campus Passport Portal which will then be reviewed by the university, according to the email. Students will be able to upload requests beginning July 19 and will be informed when the feature is made available to them.
Updates regarding the university’s COVID-19 policies and restrictions will be posted on the Summer 2021 page of the COVID-19 Response website. The university’s COVID-19 policy can be found on the COVID-19 Response page.
