Volleyball takes two at Homecoming

On Saturday, the Brandeis women’s volleyball team took on Gordon College and the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. The Judges swept both teams in the Homecoming round-robin style tournament.

The Judges beat Gordon College 3-0 in their first game of the day with scores of 25-15, 25-22, 25-15. They dominated their opponent in aces more than any other category, with 14 aces versus Gordon’s five. Four of those aces came from Yvette Cho ’19 at the beginning of the first set, helping the Judges get a 7-0 lead on their opponent. Marissa Borgert ’21 contributed three aces to the team’s 14 as well. Borgert led the team offensively with nine kills, while Emma Bartlett ’20 followed close behind with eight kills. Marlee Nork ’19 and Leah Pearlman ’19 both had successful games, splitting setting duties. Nork contributed 14 assists, while Pearlman had 12 assists in the game against Gordon.

The Judges put up a strong defense against Gordon, too. The Judges recorded 39 digs overall with Cho, the team’s libero, earning the team-high of 13 digs. The team had a total seven blocks, with Bartlett participating in six of them.

The Judges’ second match of the day was against the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs. The Judges swept the Corsairs 3-0 with scores of 25-14, 26-24, 25-10. The Judges outdid their competitor in every category with a stellar performance against their strong opponents.

Zara Platt ’19 was the only player for either teams to accumulate double-digit kills, with a career-high 11 kills in the match. Multiple Judges contributed five or more kills in the game, with Borgert earning eight, Clare Meyers ’21 with seven, and Bartlett and Belle Scott ’21 with six and five respectively.

The Judges split setting duties between multiple players. Nork led the team with an outstanding 20 assists, while Pearlman contributed eight and Megan Osorio Moran ’21 contributed seven to the effort. Defensively, Cho earned 13 of the team’s 47 digs in the match against UMass Dartmouth.

The Judges are back in action again this weekend at the University of Chicago for the University Athletics Association (UAA) Round Robin No. 2 tournament. The Brandeis women’s volleyball team will take on Case Western Reserve University and Washington University in St. Louis on Saturday, Oct. 14th and Carnegie Mellon University and New York University Sunday, Oct. 15 before returning home from Chicago, IL.
