This past weekend the Brandeis men and women’s swimming and diving team faced both Keene State University and Bridgewater State in Keene, N.H. The men’s team earned wins against both opponents, while the women’s team came out victorious against Bridgewater but lost to host Keene State.
The men’s team beat Keene State, 155-69, and Bridgewater, 124-112. The underclassmen carried the Judges, with the five first place wins coming from first year swimmers. Rookie Richard Selznick ’21 won the 1000 yard freestyle with a 40 second lead, finishing in 10:14.52. Selznick also won the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:02.48. Freshman Daniel Wohl ’21 also took home two wins for the Judges. He finished first in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time 2:18.85. Wohl also won the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:47.27, which was over five seconds before any other competitor. Marcelo Ohno-Machado ’21 finished second for the Judges in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:52.56, while winning his own first place spot in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 49.97 seconds.
The men’s swim team earned their share of second place finishes to add to their wins. Tamir Zitelny ’20 finished second in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:01.27, while Joe Beletti-Naccarato ’21 took home second place in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:05.11. The 400 yard medley relay team, comprised of Wohl, Ohno-Machado, Zitelny and Thomas Alger ’20, finished second with a time of 3:43.60. Finally, Chase Chen ’21 produced two second place finishes for the Judges with a time of 23.16 in the 50 yard freestyle and a time of 50.11 in the 100 yard freestyle.
The women’s team was victorious over Bridgewater, scoring 157 points to Bridgewater’s 77, but they lost to Keene State 150-87. The Judges took home two first place finishes and secured multiple podium spots to beat Bridgewater. Annie Huang ’21 earned a time of 57.38 in the 100 yard freestyle to secure the win. Classmate Emily McGovern ’21 won the 200 yard individual medley in 2:23.08 for the Judges’ second first place finish. McGovern also came in second in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:36.50. Huang, McGovern, Adrienne Aponte ’20 and Amy Sheinhait ’18 made up the women’s 400 yard medley relay team, which earned second place with a time of 4:23.68. Kylie Herman ’19 secured three podium spots for Brandeis, taking second place in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:04.03 and the 500 yard freestyle in 5:31.36, and third place in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:22.70.
The men and women’s diving squads competed in the one and three-meter dives at the meet as well. Julia Tartaglia ’19 finished second in the women’s one-meter dive, while Sam Zucker ’18 finished second. Of the three competing divers in the Women’s three-meter diving competition, Tartaglia finished second, while Genna Karp ’18 came in third. Zucker finished second of the two athletes competing in the men’s three-meter dive.
The Brandeis men and women’s swimming and diving team are back in action Saturday, Feb. 3, against Clark at 1 p.m. for their Senior Day.
