Men’s tennis continues winning streak

The men’s tennis team extended their winning streak this past week with three victories, improving their season record to 11-2.

The team was on the road this past weekend, playing NYU on Saturday and Stevens Institute of Technology on Sunday. In Saturday’s University Athletics Association (UAA) match-up, the Judges started the day with a 2-1 lead after doubles play. In the no. 1 spot, David Aizenberg ’20 and Anupreeth Coramutla ’21 earned a win for the Judges with an 8-5 finish. Brandeis also took the no. 3 spot, with Nikhil Das ’21 and Rajan Vohra ’21 beating their opponent 8-6. Jackson Kogan ’19 and Tyler Ng ’19 were the only pair to drop their doubles match Saturday, losing in the no. 2 spot by a score of 5-8.

In singles play, the Judges took five of six matches, with their only loss of the day coming in the no. 1 spot with Kogan falling 3-6, 2-6 to his NYU opponent. Aizenberg beat out his opponent 6-4, 6-2 in the no. 2 spot. NYU threatened in the no. 3 spot, with Vohra taking the first set before falling to his opponent in the second set, 4-6. However, Vohra secured his singles victory in the third set with a 6-4 win.

Das easily beat his opponent in the no. 4 spot, with a 6-2, 6-0 victory. In the no. 5 spot Ng and no. 6 spot Ben Wolfe ’20 both took two set victories over their NYU opponents, easily winning one set and snatching the other by one point. The Judges finished the day with a 7-2 victory over NYU before moving on to Stevens Institute of Technology.

In doubles action against Stevens, the Judges took all three matches. In the top spot, Aizenberg and Coramutla beat their opponents 8-6, while Ng and Kogan beat their opponents in the no. 2 spot in a tiebreak 9-8. Das and Vohra made up the last pair for the Judges, crushing their opponent in the no 3 spot 8-0.

In singles action, the Judges again took five of six matches. Aizenberg came out victorious in the no. 1 spot winning 6-4, 6-4. Kogan squeaked by in the second set of his no. 2 match-up to earn Brandeis another win. Vohra in the no. 3 spot and Das in the no. 4 spot crushed their opponents, as well. The only athlete to go three sets in singles play was Ng in the no. 5 spot. He dropped the first set, before coming back strong in the next two sets to earn his win for the Judges.

The only singles loss of the day for the Judges was Wolfe in the no. 6 spot, losing by two points in both sets. The Judges finished their travels with an 8-1 victory over Stevens.

The Judges returned home for their third match of the week this past Wednesday against Bentley, winning 7-2. The Judges won all three doubles matches against Bentley, despite changes in the usual line-up. Kogan and Ng took the no. 1 position, winning 8-4. Das and Vohra also moved up a slot, competing in the no. 2 spot, and earned an 8-3 victory for the Judges. Coramutla found himself paired with a new partner, senior captain Eric Goldberg ’18, in the no. 3 spot. Goldberg and Coramutla beat their Bentley opponent 8-6.

The Judges dominated in singles action again, taking four of six matches. Vohra crushed his opponent in the no. 1 spot, with a 6-1, 6-3 victory. Kogan wasn’t so lucky, with a tough loss in the no. 2 spot, 6-2, 6-3. Das earned a victory for the Judges in the no. 3 spot with a 6-3, 6-4 finish, while Coramutla competed in the no. 6 spot, winning 6-3, 6-4.

Ng fought through a long match against his opponent in the no. 4 spot, going three sets. Ng took the first set, before losing the second and eventually the last set in a tiebreak to lose the match. The no. 5 spot saw an usual face for the Judges, Ethan Saal ’19, earn a solid victory for Brandeis. Saal won the first set, before dropping the second. However, determined to prove the Judges’ depth, Saal earned a match victory, winning the third set 11-9.

The Judges are back in action this Friday, April 13 in a home match against Bowdoin College. The match will start at 3 pm.
