Brandeis track and field finishes with a successful weekend

This past weekend was an eventful one for the Brandeis University indoor track and field teams, who competed in two meets; the Terrier Classic at Boston University and the Branwen Smith-King Invitational at Tufts University.

The women performed well on Friday night, as many of the Judges placed high in their individual events. In the first event of the night, Sonali Anderson ’22 placed fifth in the second heat, with a time of 9.54 seconds which would place her as second among D3 runners. Next, Senior Doyin Ogundiran ‘19 finished her 800 meter run in 2:12.99, which became her personal best while placing her fifth nationally. The Judges shined in the mile run competition as three runners placed in the top 20 of D3. Senior Emily Bryson ran the fastest time in D3 this season thus far by finishing her mile in a time of 4:49.68, which placed her third in the first heat overall. Joining her success in this event was teammate and sister, Julia Bryson ’19, who placed fourth in her heat with a time of 5:00.38. Freshmen Jac Guerra performed very well, running the mile in a time of 5:03.85 to win the heat and place 25th overall. Just last week, Guerra was selected as UAA Women’s Track and Field Athlete of the week for his mile run time at the Bowdoin Invitational. Lastly, Brandeis’ relay team of Maya Bliss ‘19, Lisbeth Valdez ‘21, Ogundiran ‘19 and Devin Hiltunen ‘22 won their heat in the 4x400M relay, ranking them nationally as well.

At Tufts, Senior Kanya Brown’s time of 8.38 seconds placed herself seventh overall in the 60M dash. Another seventh place finish came from Freshman Anna Touitou who finished the 200M in 27.63.

On the men’s side, two Judges competed at BU on Saturday. In the 200M dash, Junior Lorenzo Maddox ‘20 finished second in the heat with a time of 23.30, just missing his personal best time by 0.03 seconds. Later, in the throwing events, Senior Scott Grote ‘19 placed in both the Shot Put and Weight Throw events.

In the Branwen Smith-King Invitational at Tufts, the men finished with two fourth place finishes. One came from Sophomore Breylen Ammen ‘21, who earned his career-best in the the pole vault with a height of 4.55 meters. Over in the 60 meter hurdles event, Freshman Dion Morris-Evans earned a time of 8.70 in the finals to place him fourth as well.

Next week, the Judges will return to action at Tufts University again to compete in the Cupid Challenge. They will compete in three more meets before the UAA Indoor Track and Field Championship at the end of the month.
