The Brandeis University fencing team hosted the Beanpot tournament Wednesday, Feb. 13. The men went 1-2 on the evening, beating MIT, while the women were 0-3. Harvard University won the meet with top ranked teams with the women ranked No. 2 in the nation by CollegeFencing360 and men No. 5. The Brandeis men finished in third. The men’s scores were: Harvard 21, Brandeis 6 (S, 6-3; F, 9-0; E, 6-3), Boston College 14, Brandeis 13 (S, 5-4; F, 6-3; E, 3-6), Brandeis 18, MIT 9 (S, 6-3, F, 7-2; E, 5-4).
On the women’s side, they finished with scores of Harvard 20, Brandeis 7 (S, 8-1; F, 5-4; E, 7-2), Boston College 22, Brandeis 5 (S, 9-0; F, 6-3; E, 7-2), MIT 14, Brandeis 13 (S, 7-2; F, 2-7; E, 5-4).
The Judges were able to get two wins each against the second ranked Harvard, as sabre fencer Charles Catino ’20 and epee Chris Armstrong ’20 picked up wins. In round two, the Brandeis men got on the board against MIT, with an 18-9 win. Ian Quin ’20 went 3-0 for the foil team, while Sam Chestna ’20 and Jared Sugarman ’21 each went 2-1 as the squad finished 7-2. On the women’s side, Joanna Carminucci ’19 led the foil squad by going 3-0 against the Harvard Crimson. The squad narrowly lost, 5-4. The women then took a 7-2 win in foil, as Renee Pite ’19 went 3-0, while Carminucci ’19 and Hannah Mui ’20 were each 2-1. In the final round of the day, the men were almost able to avenge the 18-9 loss to Boston College from the Northeast Conference meet, but the Eagles hung on to win 14-13. The Judges won epee, 6-3, but B.C. bounced back with a 6-3 win in foil, despite Quin going 3-0. In sabre, the visitors were able to clinch the victory with a close score of 5-4.
The women’s team also traveled to New Jersey for the FDU Invitational at Fairleigh Dickinson this past Sunday. The Judges won six of their seven matches, with their one loss being a close 14-13 score. The scores for the seven matches were: Brandeis 14, Wagner 13 (S, 3-6; F, 4-5; E, 7-2), Brandeis 23, CCNY 4 (S, 9-0; F, 5-4; E, 9-0), Brandeis 21, LIU Post 6 (S, 9-0; F, 7-2; E, 5-4), Brandeis 21, FDU 6 (S, 7-2; F, 8-1; E, 6-3), NJIT 14, Brandeis 13 (S, 2-7; F, 7-2; E, 4-5), Brandeis 18, Lafayette 9 (S, 4-5; F, 8-1; E, 6-3), Brandeis 15 and Drew 12 (S, 2-7; F, 6-3; E, 7-2). The squad teams finished with foil going 6-1, epee going 6-1 and saber, 3-4. Both teams return to action with the New England Collegiate Championships on March 2 at Wellesley.
