Women’s tennis competes in NEWITT’s

This weekend, the Brandeis Women’s Tennis team traveled to Northampton, MA to compete in the New England Women’s Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITTs). The tournament paired groups of two from each school to play in two singles matches and one doubles. 

In the “A Draw” of the tournament, the top players for Brandeis were Diana Dehterevich ’20 and Lauren Bertsch ’21. In their first doubles matchup of the tournament, Dehterevich/Bertsch defeated Tufts top team Suk/Garrido 2-1 with scores of 8-7(5). Dehterevich also pulled out a singles match win against Suk 7-5, 6-2, but Bertsch couldn’t hold off Garrido and lost 4-6, 2-6. 

The two then went on to the quarterfinals against Amherst’s Jackie Buzkin and Claire Evans. In doubles, Dehterevich and Bertsch beat Buzkin/Evans 8-2. Dehterevich then went on to roll past Buzkin 6-2, 6-1 in singles, but again Bertsch couldn’t get past Evans, losing 4-6, 3-6. 

Dehterevich and Bertsch advanced to the semifinals on Saturday, where they lost to eventual champions from Amherst, Owensby and Ramras. In doubles they lost to Owensby/Ramras 5-8, and in singles, Dehterevich pulled out an impressive 6-0, 7-6(5) win over Owensby, but Bertsch lost to Ramras 0-6, 2-6.

In the “B Draw,” the duo of Ana Hatfield ’22 and Isabel Cepeda ’21 faced Wesleyan’s Henderson and Tran in the first round, where they lost 3-0 in doubles and singles. But after losing in the first round, they came back in the consolation quarter finals and won 2-1, winning 8-3 in doubles. Hatfield also beat Grasimova from Mount Holyoke 6-1, 6-0, and Cepeda lost to Peabody 5-7, 3-6. The duo then moved on to the consolation semifinals to beat Endicott’s Foley and Berler 3-0. But in the consolation finals, Hatfield and Cepeda were unable to top MIT’s Fernandez/Kitova where the lost 0-3 in doubles and singles. 

In the “D Draw,” Grace Wang ’23 was teamed up with Formicola from Wheaton. The pair was able to beat Mount Holyoke in doubles 8-6, but they both lost in singles. They still moved on to the consolation semifinals where the two secured another doubles win against Smith 8-5. Wang also won in singles against Essenmacher 6-2, 6-2. Then in the consolation finals, Wang picked up another singles win 6-1, 6-3, but the duo lost in doubles 5-8. 

The women’s and men’s teams are heading to Middlebury this weekend to compete in their final tournament of fall.
