On Feb. 23, the Judges fencing teams participated in the New England Intercollegiate Fencing Championships. The women’s foil squad took home a silver medal, while the men’s foil squad earned bronze.
The women’s foil squad consisted of Eva Bassik ‘28, Rhea Menon ‘26 and Ella Richards ‘27. They finished second to MIT. In the preliminary round, the Judges went 19-2, with their only losses coming to MIT and Vassar. In the finals, the Judges went 13-5 with losses to MIT and Vassar and a 2-1 performance against Dartmouth. They also beat Northeastern, BU and Sacred Heart 3-0. Menon led the Judges, going 7-0 in her matches.
The men’s foil squad was composed of Alex Fortune ’28, Jacob Lee ’28, Jack Sullivan ’27 and Brandon Zhao ’28. The Judges finished with a 16-5 record in the opening round before going 12-6 in the finals. They finished in third place behind Sacred Heart and MIT. The Judges’ only loss was to Sacred Heart. They swept Vassar and Tufts. Lee went undefeated in his six matchups, while Sullivan went 5-1.
The men’s saber squad just missed out on the bronze medal, coming in fourth place. The squad of Alex Piwowar ’27, Joy Qiu ’25 and Anthony Rabinkov ’25 went 17-4 in the preliminary round. Brandeis finished with a 10-8 record in the finals pool, the same as MIT, but lost on indicator. Brandeis swept Vassar and Sacred Heart but lost to Brown, Tufts and MIT. They beat Northeastern 2-1.
The men’s epee squad finished in sixth place. The women’s epee and saber squads were fencing with a limited roster. They finished ninth and 14th, respectively.
Next weekend, the women’s team will participate in the National Intercollegiate Women’s Fencing Association Championships. On March 9, both the men’s and women’s teams will compete in the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships.
