Liam’s Looks: Jewelry

Hello and welcome to another installment of Liam’s Looks, the segment of The Hoot where I, Liam, provide you with fashion advice on how to level up your style game! Today, we will be talking about how to make sure your jewelry game is on point.

Accessories in general are a great way to make or break an outfit—do it right, and you’ll look classy, but too much can easily look bad. Never wear something that is gaudy. Rings, for instance, can look beautiful when they have a lot of shine and bling, but they can also easily look cheap. You might think that more expensive-looking accessories make you look more elegant, but the opposite is often true. When someone is covered in shine and designer logos, that’s how you know they don’t know this rule.

To pull off the look, make sure you buy jewelry that is largely simple and understated. Buy signature pieces, of course, but don’t only buy them. Rings are the easiest to overdo, but also add the most elegance because they aren’t very common typically for an everyday look. If you see something from a designer brand, there are also very good chances someone made a cheaper version on Amazon. My favorite ring is styled after a beautiful Cartier. But be careful: Some knockoffs are not worth it, are poorly made, and look like a cheap version of the original.

Necklaces can be big, but only if they’re the one big thing in a look. A simple chain can often look more elegant. Necklaces are also a way to sometimes add a pop of color.

Earrings are very versatile and can easily tie your outfit together if you pick a pair that has a similar color palette as your outfit. From hoop earrings all the way to studs and even more artistically designed earrings can completely change the language of an outfit, so definitely experiment with them. The other option is a single metal, either silver or gold.

Next, we’ll look at bracelets. These are the easiest to do well, because anything from a diamond tennis bracelet to a simple beaded bracelet can look iconic, and they can be very versatile in terms of what outfits can work with them. There’s also the option of wearing a leather bracelet as a single band of brown or black color that you’re adding to your outfit.

My final tip is to mix metals carefully. If you do, layer gold and silver on top of each other instead of putting one gold bracelet on the left and silver on the right, for example. One color looks best, but mixed options, especially mixed in the same piece, are often gorgeous. If you choose to mix, keep it to no more than two metals.

My best tip for jewelry is to look at everything you’re wearing together and realize that only one piece should be a statement piece. The rest should be understated, complimenting your outfit and not overpowering it: less can be more.
