The men’s and women’s swimming teams travelled to Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) this past weekend, both splitting on the weekend. The men’s team competed against Babson College and WPI, while the women competed against Babson College, Simmons University, Smith College and WPI.
Men’s Swimming
Brendon Lu ’22 was the sole triple winner for the Judges at the meet, winning the 50- and 100-yard breaststroke and the 400-yard IM events. Lu finished the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 28.24 and the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:01.55. Lu narrowly beat out his teammate, Josh Liu ’23, in 400-yard IM by just over a tenth of a second, with a time of 4:23.83. Liu finished with a time of 4:23.94.
Daniel Wohl ’21 tied for first in the 200-yard freestyle with Babsons’ Aaron Huynh with a time of 1:43.35. His time was almost six seconds faster than his predicted seed time. Wohl also placed second in the 100-yard freestyle, this time right behind Huynh, with a time of 47.86.
Tamir Zitelny ’20 performed well overall in his individual and relay races. In the 400-yard medley relay, the Brandeis “A team,” made of Zitelny, Lu, Matthew Arcemont ’20 and Marcelo Ohno-Machado ’21, finished second in the relay with a time of 3:36.54. Zitelny also swam alongside Wohl, Ohno-Machado and Matthew Arcemont in the 400-yard freestyle relay and earned second place with a time of 3:13.69. In the 100-yard butterfly event, Zitelny finished second with a time of 51.42, less than two-tenths of a second away from Babson’s Alex Damiecki, who came in first place. Zitelny also finished third in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 53.75.
Richard Selznick ’21 finished second in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:20.18, 16 seconds slower than Babson’s Alvin Oentoro, who came in first place. He also finished second in the 500-yard freestyle race with a time of 4:58.93.
Brandeis beat WPI (140-131) but lost to Babson College (142.50-119.5). The men’s team is now 2-2 on the season.
Women’s Swimming
Rookie Bailey Gold ’23 had a pair of second place finishes in individual events and was the top performer for the Judges. She finished second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.07 and in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:02.52. Teammate Audrey Kim ’21 was just over a second slower than Gold, finishing fourth with a time of 1:03.58. Gold also finished fourth in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:04.20, just under a second slower than the third place swimmer.
Uajda Musaku ’21 also took a pair of second places throughout her individual and relay races. She finished second in the 100-yard freestyle with at time of 56.46. Musaku was joined by Kim, Ema Rennie ’23 and rookie Christina McPhillips ’23, who together placed third in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:49.81. McPhillips also finished second in the 50-yard butterfly, finishing with a time of 28.36, seven-tenths of a second behind WPI’s Katherine Pawlak, who came in first place.
Brandeis beat Simmons (148-141) and Smith College (168-125) while losing to Babson (99-160) and WPI (218.50-74.50). The women are now 2-4 on the season.
The Judges return to action this weekend. Both teams will travel across town on Friday, Nov. 15 to compete against Bentley and will be hosting Colby College on Saturday, Nov. 16.
