Judges compete at three meets in one week

For the fourth, fifth and sixth meets of the indoor track and field season, the Judges didn’t need to go far. The men’s and women’s teams ran at the Cupid Invitational at Tufts University on Feb. 4, the Valentine’s Invitational at Boston University (BU) on Feb. 10 and the Gordon Kelly Invitational at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on Feb. 11.

At the Cupid Invitational, the men’s team finished eighth place while the women’s team took 13th place. Brandeis’ only first-place finish at the meet came in the 800-meter run, with TJ Carleo ’26 finishing first with a time of 1:56.25, the best attained by the team this season. Ori Slotky ’24 set two new personal records at this meet, with a distance of 12.33 meters in the triple jump and a time of 9.40 in the 60-meter hurdles. Artemis Reynolds ’23 also set a personal record at this meet with a distance of 13.39 meters in the weight throw. Alya Campbell ’24 and Shaniece Nugent ’26 both set personal records, with Campbell running a 9.22 in the 60-meter hurdles and Nugent leaping 10.98 meters in the triple jump.

At the David Hemery Valentine’s Invitational, a non-scoring event, the Judges competed against both Division I and Division III teams. This meet was not like the others, as the men’s and women’s teams competed on different days. On Friday, the women’s team competed. Liz Korn ’23 ran for a time of 59.48 seconds in the 400-meter dash, As of Feb. 11, Korn’s time was good for the fifth-best time in the University Athletic Association (UAA). Yahni Lapa ’23 also competed in the 400-meter dash. She set a new personal record of 1:00.63 seconds, the seventh best time in the UAA. Campbell also set a personal record with a time of 26.47 seconds in the 200-meter dash. Bridget Pickard ’23 and Ella Warkentine ’26 competed in the mile run, recording times of 5:19.88 and 5:23.39 respectively. On Saturday, the men’s team competed. Matthew Driben ’23 set a personal record in the 5000-meter run with a time of 14:51.87, a time that’s second best in the UAA and almost in the top-50 of all of Division III indoor track and field. Samuel Kim ’24 and Leo Schiappa ’26 set personal records, with times of 1:54.90 in the 800-meter run and 52.74 in the 400-meter dash respectively.

Also on Saturday was the Gordon Kelly Invitational, and both the men’s and women’s teams competed. On the men’s team, Dion Morris-Evans ’23 won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.66 seconds, came fifth in the high jump with a height of 1.82 meters and came seventh in the long jump with a distance of 5.90 meters. Morris’ 60-meter hurdles time is the sixth best time in the UAA. TJ Showstead ’26 competed in the 60-meter dash, setting a personal record with a time of 7.72 seconds. The men’s team set two personal records in the long jump, as Ori Slotky and Lin Lin Hutchison ’25 jumped 12.76 meters and 12.25 meters respectively. Slotky’s distance was good for third place while Hutchison’s was good for fourth place. The men’s team’s personal records continued with two more in the shot put. Cam Peirce ’25 recorded a distance of 12.32 meters and Jonathan Hau ’23 recorded a distance of 11.97 meters. On the women’s team, Campbell narrowly set another new personal record with a time of 9:36 in the 60-meter hurdles. The team had several competitors in the 200-meter dash, as Nugent set a personal record with a time of 27.97 seconds, Ianna Gilbert ’24 recorded a time of 29.04 seconds and Hailey Crane ’25 recorded a time of 29.80 seconds. All of the women’s competitors in the shotput set personal records, with Emma Liu’s ’26 9.68-meter throw, Diane Meyer’s ’26 9.14-meter throw and Kate Hurlbert’s ’25 8.98-meter throw.

Next up, the men’s and women’s indoor track teams will compete at the Wheaton Invitational. This event will be at Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts on Saturday, Feb. 18.
