Brandeis men’s soccer ties with Carnegie Mellon; falls to MIT

On Sept. 30, the Brandeis Judges men’s soccer team tied 1-1 against the Carnegie Mellon University Tartans. Both goals came in the first half of the game, with Roee Maor ’24 scoring the Judges’ only goal at 41:19 and the Tartans scoring on a free kick at 14:58.

Throughout the game, each team was shown five yellow cards. Early in the game, Sancho Maroto Tobias ’24 was pulled down while attempting to score, but referees only issued a yellow card. Maroto Tobias was unable to capitalize on the ensuing free kick opportunity. The Tartans scored a few short minutes after that free kick, with the Judges evening the score just before the end of the first half. Maor, assisted by Aidan Chuang ’27, rocketed a shot off of the left goalpost and in.

Over the course of the game, the Judges took 20 shots to the Tartans’ 7, and 7 shots on goal to the Tartans’ 4. The Judges also had more corner kicks, (seven to the Tartans’ two), and fouls (16 to the Tartans’ 15).

Then, on Oct. 4 the Judges lost 2-1 against the Massachusetts Instirute of Technology (MIT) Engineers. The Engineers got on the board quickly, scoring before even 10 minutes had passed in the first half. The Judges weren’t able to find an answer until the 52nd minute, when Rainer Osselmann-Chai ’26 hit a free kick in. Notably, this was Osselmann-Chai’s first goal of the season.

The game wouldn’t stay tied for too long, though, as the Engineers netted a goal off of a penalty kick attempt rebound at 62:09. Then, in the 80th minute, Brandeis began playing down a player after Nick Dunstan-Maiese ’24 was assessed two yellow cards.

The teams were about even in shots (12 Judges – 13 Engineers), dead even in saves (6 Judges – 6 Engineers) and the Judges led in corner kicks (5 Judges – 1 Engineers).

Next, the Judges will face off against the Washington University in Saint Louis (WashU) Bears on Saturday, Oct. 7.
